Redwoods

These photos are from redwood parks around our house, including Joaquin-Miller Park, Redwood Park and Anthony Chabot Park. Way back in the early 1800's this area was one of the most heavily populated redwood forests in California--with some of the trees over 300 ft/100 m tall, and with diameters at the base of 30 ft/10 m. Two such trees were apparently used as navigation markers for ships entering the San Francisco Bay. Most of these magnificent redwood trees were cut down in the 1850's during the Gold Rush, and again after the 1905 San Francisco earthquake. These are 2nd and 3rd generation growths, now protected in regional parklands and preserves.
